Aquasky are part of the Golden Era of Drum & Bass. An era when new sounds were created, new doors opened and new fans collected. Signed to Moving Shadow, Good Looking, Hospital, Polydor and R&S back in the 90's this EP is their output on 4 Hero's Reinforced Records... and anyone who was about in those days will recall how legendary London based Dollis Hill is part of the DNA of Drum & Bass. The title of this EP is taken from the Rakim lyric 'Doing It With The R', the vocal 'The R' being sampled back in the day on Reinforced and a nickname given to the label by the artists recording for it. This EP contains Aquasky's debut EP titled 'Concrete Boom' on Reinforced from 1996 (though the release did not see the light of day till 1997). Containing 'Moondance' (named after the legendary raves from the early 90's that were always advertised on pirate radio stations back then ... "Moooooondaaaanceeeeeee") and two Trip Hop tracks called 'April/Concrete Boom', this is a snapshot of the early d&b artists shifting away from the genre and experimenting with other sounds. Though genre-shifting was frowned on by the most d&b artists back in the 90's, now it would be hard to find a d&b producer who only made d&b! Aquasky went against the trend in the 90's and following their instincts were forbearers of the d&b scene we have now, 20 years later. 'Alien Honey' was Aquasky's input to the 'Enforcers - Beginning Of The End' LP (1997) featuring other greats of the time such as Doc Scott, DJ Die, Krust, Roni Size, Seiji & 4 Hero. Spacelink was the name of Brent Newitt's d&b project of the same time. Dave Wallace was producing as errr... Dave Wallace on Moving Shadow and Kieron Bailey was releasing as Artemis on Underdog Recordings. Dave engineered this project and has joint production credits. 'Timezone' was featured on one of the most revered compilations of the 90's - Kruder & Dorfmeister 'DJ Kicks' (alongside another Aquasky track) and 'Offset Jazz' was one of Fabio's favourite tracks from 1996 and can be heard on many of his sets at the time, on his Kiss FM show and spun at classic nights such as Speed and the Metalheadz Sunday Sessions at The Blue Note. In addition, the Spacelink 12" was remixed by Brent, Dave and Kieron under their Spacelink/Artemis aliases. 'Timezone' is taken down a darker jazz route with a full on classic apache Reinforced beatchop vibe. Artemis drops the tempo to 120bpm with a breakbeat excursion, a predecessor to the direction Aquasky would take in the late 90's. Finally, we found the original Amen Demo of 'Timezone' on an old DAT tape in the vaults which never saw the light of day 20 years ago... so we wanted to share that.
