Leipzig has always been a hotbed. Especially, when in GDR times the spirit of revolution was taking over here. The mixture of East German provincialism and the international character of a trade fair town turned out to be fascinating and explosive at the same time. The local pop scene proved to be just as distinct as that. Those who were aiming to convince the only GDR-pop label AMIGA, at some point found themselves back in the capital. But the underdogs were striving southwards the “Bockwurstaquator”. Bands like „Wutanfall“, „Die Art“, or „Messer Banzani“ were rocking the backyards of squats, that were legally not allowed to exist. A majority of the sound that escorted the change was written in Leipzig. Who should be surprised, that along with the “Fall of the Wall” a blooming Pop scene made its way through the remains. Leipzig did not only accommodate “Die Prinzen” - the first all-German Popstars - but in the early 90ies nearly everyone living in the Eastern part was able to sing along to songs as I LoveYou (Marian)“ or „Peace is wonder“. Heavenly Voices were established here as stylistics for this country, Think About Mutation commemorated a seminal crossover between Metal and Techno, long before other people were gaining wealth with it! Reggae and Rap existed in the city on an international level, which had not been reached elsewhere in the country yet. Leipzig turned out to be the Mekka of the worldwide Gothic-movement as well as the hometown of exciting projects such as the alternative Pop-Up fair in the subsequent years. The urban electronic club music found its continuity in internationally acknowledged clubs. At the same time the debate regarding pop and its political responsibility came by attention all over the country and reached its controversial peek in Leipzig’s south. In total we can claim that the city was envied for the existing subcultural “Clubscape” which included nearly all musical genres. Despite a few flashes of hope flaring up for Leipzig’s pop heroes the vision kept being a vision. There have been some promising approaches but the commercialization was detained by higher forces. The lively scene of the city has produced numerous hits, that did not turn out to be any in the end. 25 years after the memorable Monday, on which the Leipzig crowd walked around their city center and thereby started a process that ended in a totally different country, continent and world, the treasure of the fair trade town is supposed to be unearthed! 25 songs in 25 years are not close to being it all, that would have deserved it, but they do show an impressive creative potential of the city: Leipzig is Calling You!
